• Gwangju, the city of light, is located in the southwestern part of the South Korea and is the capital of Honam region.

• For centuries, Gwangju was regarded for its rich culture and arts. Viewed mostly as an economic and educational center of the southwestern area in Korea, and the city has risen to become a leading production center. The emerging importance of Korea's western coastline has triggered large-scale urban development projects in the region, including the construction of Gwangju hi-tech industrial complex. This transformation has led to rapid urbanization and drastic improvements in housing and leisure facilities. Not only that, Gwangju Korea is also becoming a prime convention spot in southwestern region, owing to its state-of-the-art facilities and best in class amenities. In 2007, the Korean Government designated Gwangju as one of six international convention cities in Korea.

• The biggest strength of Gwangju as a MICE site is : its celebrated and famous Korean cuisine, exuberant cultural and artistic resources, and colorful tourism sites.

• As the cultural mecca of Korea, Gwangju is famous for its distinguished sources of culture and taste. Gwangju is regarded as a city rich in culture and art, as evidenced by on-going exhibitions and performances which make the city all the more vibrant and colorful. Every two years, the Gwangju Biennale features a two-month long contemporary art exhibition that invites international artists to display their theme-based work. Annually, Gwangju continues to host the Gwangju Kimchi Festival before the winter season, as it promotes the varieties of palatable Korean kimchi, a world great fermented dish, and traditional Korean culture. Gwangju also supports a traditional music orchestra and numerous neighborhood festivals that contain ancient and modern Korean cultural offerings. Through joining many international conventions and events, visitors discover the Tastes and Beauty of Gwangju.

    The Gwangju Biennale is Asia’s representative contemporary art biennial. Founded in 1995, it has established itself as one of the leading major global exhibitions, and is regarded as a pioneer in curatorial experiments in the field of contemporary art. It has made a significant cultural impact across Asia and the rest of the world.

  • Gwangju Design Biennale

    The Gwangju Design Biennale provides visitors with insights into future design trends. It is the world's first comprehensive design exhibition hosted in Gwangju, the cultural hub of Asia.

  • Hub City of Asian Culture Project

    “Hub City of Asian Culture Project”, administered by the national government of Korea, is the single largest cultural project in the history of the nation. The project aims to forge cultural ties and establish a forum of exchange with the various countries of Asia, and enhance the overall quality of life of the Asian community by transforming Gwangju into a culture city of noble concepts. The project aspires to create a forum where all Asians can share and exchange the precious cultural assets of the continent.

  Gwangju is well-known for its authentic Korean cuisine and warm local hospitality. Ideally located in between the west coast plains and the West Sea, Gwangju has always had access to a rich variety of fresh ingredients.     The annual Gwangju Kimchi Cultural Festival has won national acclaim and several awards for its innovative approach and work in promoting and globalizing the culinary tradition of Korean kimchi. As a festival celebrating the quintessential Korean culinary tradition, the Gwangju Kimchi Cultural Festival is rapidly growing into a truly international cultural event.

• The City that Cherishes Democracy, Human Rights and Peace

  Gwangju is a well-known city for its stance on democracy, human rights and peace because of its historic background (the Gwangju Massacre of May 1980). It has always strived to keep these values alive (E.g. by hosting the "Asian Women's Peace Forum in 2005", the "2006 Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates", the "World Women's Peace Forum in 2007", the "World Youth Peace Forum in 2008"). • International Convention City

  Gwangju is the hometown of a former president and a Nobel Peace Laureate, Kim Dae-jung, after whom this state-of-the-art convention center in named. Since the opening of the KDJCC and the launch of Gwangju Convention & Visitors' Bureau, Gwangju City has grown into a world-class international convention city. Gwangju hosted major international events, such as the "World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates in 2006", the "World Women Peace Forum in 2007". It will host the "2011 Gwangju Summit of the Urban Environmental Accords Cities", the "World Hydrogen Energy Conference 2014", and the "2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade".
